Legacy still open
I can’t delete a chapter at the moment. I can only set it aside. There is literally no way for me to fully delete a chapter.—not actually true, but the fact that I couldn’t find it said everything. anyway, that’s done, shift+del (sorta) works now.
Unrelated but as i was typing this i also noticed that my caret doesn’t move to the end of the line my mouse is aligned with when i click outside the width of the writing space.—done
Unrelated again but the config modal should be bigger. i’m thinking big enough that the small three page preview i suggested for the color config actually be inside the modal and not next to it. That’s also to allow bindings to be seen with a bigger picture.
The keybinding config is a config. If someone is configuring their bindings and you have literally changed the bindings to be dependent on a scope, then the scope has to appear as a configuration parameter.
I don’t know if that’s normal so i’m saying it in case: shift+del and del don’t work, as well as arrow navigation in the outline and chapter navigation shortcuts in the writing space. I’m assuming they haven’t been implemented yet, but i rather make sure—done
I just accidentally clicked on ctrl+N while set aside was toggled and it created a new chapter at the beginning for some reason. I think it might have to with it being unumbered. I don’t know if it affects other non-chapters (but non set aside) ones as well.
I haven’t written a letter in that chapter but it won’t undo its creation—actually, undo does work on creation, but not if you accidentally set it aside and restore it (undo should work on set aside too actually, and not just through a button)
I can still input text in a deleted chapter title but it doesn’t affect the title of the chapter. if they’re fully editable, they’re fully editable, period. this seems to suggest that the whole thing about factorising wasn’t adequately done (it had been mentioned for outtakes and not for set aside chapters).
Set aside chapters are not clickable (renamable or openable—I’m not saying it necessarily should be renamable, but that’s how normal chapters behave in the homepage) from the book homepage.
Escape from an outtakes, moves to last selected chapter—that’s apparently normal from a component stand point, but not from a ux stand point.
A scene break inserted on an empty line should insert it on the line an move the caret after it (currently, it doesn’t move the caret anhd insert it on the next line—inserting it on the next line is fine for non empty line though, but the caret should move either way, it’s like typing anything).—done
Also, in set-aside view, I can’t tell which chapters are set aside and which are just unamed.
For the backspace behaving differently for the scene break when there is text on the line and when there isn’t: I tried it, I think it’s sensible.—nothing to do
Backspace now works on a scene break (selects it). Arrows work too. However, when using backspace (selecting it) and then downward arrow, the carret doesn’t reappear.—done
Also, to select the scenebreak with the mouse, I need to be extremely precise.—done
Unrelated, but I also noticed that the cursor in the margin still doesn’t work (might be normal, just notifying in case). Clicking under the text sometimes moves the text when it moves the caret, sometimes doesn’t, I haven’t managed to figure out what causes it to happen or not. And clicking between paragraphs puts the caret at the beginning of the next line instead of selecting the closest of the two lines and placing the caret where you are in it.—done
Clicking in the margin shouldn’t behave the same way on left and right: it needs to be in the closest place a caret can be (currently always put at the start of the line).—actually it worked, the issue is that a wrapped line ends in a space, so putting the caret at the end automatically wrap it to the next word, so the fix is actually to move the caret one whitespace backwards.
Noticed that scene breaks can’t be selected by dragging.—done (actual issue: selection for a scenebreak didn’t show)
Selection doesn’t work from the margin—which also means that clicking and dragging doesn’t take the dragging into account if the clicking happened into the margin, so my caret isn’t where my mouse was when i mouseup’d.—done
I noticed that insecable spaces before stuff like “:” (in french) doesn’t exist. Didn’t try to change dictionary but i don’t think that’s relevant at all (at this point at least).
There’s an issue with right alignement. The caret solution happens to work because right align also puts the space before the wrap, but that means the alignment is actually no good for lines that don’t end in a white space (like, paragraph ending generally).
Also, unrelated, but I don’t know if the cursor shouldn’t be the writing one on the side since it allows insertion in the text (dunno)—seriously can’t tell what i meant by that—oh i remember: in the margin, the curso is the arrow and not the carret like one, and i was wondering if this should be changed—Apparently that’s fine, it shouldn’t be the caret cursor if it’s impossible to insert the caret exactly where we are.
When a book is open, you can’t open the writing space with enter from the bookshelf, which doesn’t make sense. The button could be named differently, but it should exist. Well, actually, the shortcut should exists, the button i dunno.
When entering the contents with the keyboard, it automatically opens the panel (this is good), but it doesn’t close it automatically (this is bad). If the panel was opened with the command, it should be closed once the command is accomplished (enter on a chapter). if someone wants the panel to stay open, they can just open the panel themselves.
Also, thinking there should be two commands: entering the contents panel from the top, or from the current chapter.
I think shift+del should be allowed without having the keyboard inside the outline panel. It then would delete the current chapter and can only be triggered if the panel is open.
Right-click on chapter in the outline panel should at least offer the following commands: turn into {chapter}/ turn into not-a-{chapter}, set aside, delete permanently. Because those would be accompanied by their shortcuts, shif+del here needs to delete the chapter on which the right-click happened (we can’t have a shortcut be displayed and not do what it says it does).
I just thought of a new, kinda essential feature: aliases. When I first started writing stories I had a qwerty and was typing in french and those saved my life. Having “aa” be replaced by “à” allowed me to actually be able to type “à”. It should be triggered on space and undone on backspace. Though i don’t know how to not retrigger it on the next space.
I feel like it might actually be slightly slower than instantaneous when typing. It’s been bothering me because i really liked that aspect of having it be local, but it turns out the latency doesn’t come from chromium itself. It comes froma few things:
I was also thinking about making it as lightweight as an electron app can possibly be.
Anyway, after some unrelated exploration, it turns out that nim, which is already installed on my computer because i meant to learn it, would actually work perfectly as the engine of stuck. It can take care of all the state handling and core of the app while react and vite act as the shell. This shouls allow better performances and quicker response time.
I’ve been looking for a highlevel language that suited me for a while anyway, and I feel nim is really perfect for me. So I can just code the nim part while i orchestrate claude on the webdev part.
I was thinking about how changing to book titles that don’t affect the branch name (like change in letter case or the likes) shouldn’t trigger the whole scary message and shouldn’t try to rewrite the branch name since it’s useless. That means computing the branch name and comparing it to the current one. Which also means you can actually check if a branch with that name already exists if there is a need to rewrite it, and offere to either switch to the branch, delete the old branch (?), and change the name.
Down arrow after backspace that selected the scene break doesn’t show the caret (possibly already mentioned)
New chapter button really sucks. My mouse went to top right (closing contents button), right under the last chapter, then just looked around in confusion as i couldn’t find how to make a new chapter.
To check (since there was the whole thing where i lost all my configs so i’m not sure what caused it): when i opened the app after a reboot, it opened in window mode instead of fullpage (it’s supposed to save the last one—but actually, i think the default should be fullpage anyway).
Using “last saved at XX:XX” instead of “saved”, “saving”, “unsaved” states which are ambiguous and can become easily stressful.
I’m surprised i didn’t mention moving chapter between books—maybe it was lost as well.
(thinking about removing the line for the outline or at least separating it from other lines so it can be made the same color as the background)
—> the scroll bar shoul similarly be separated from the rest -_- (i thought i had a bug with it until i realized it was just not showing which in turn made me realize it was colored with “lines”)
The hovering “selection” in the contents doesn’t disappear when i stop hovering.
I think renaming a chapter should be a double click or somehting in the book page, and single click should open it.
I think a button shortcut to the writing space might be nice (when it’s open already): something like Windows bottom right corner (empty everything)—considering the writing space as the lowest level.
TAB at the end of the keymapping config modal sends you to background instead of looping.
ESC when in keybinding input mode closes the modal and shouldn’t.
Maybe do something about the empty “Author” field in book homepage? it’s annoying and useless most of the time.
Just had some issues where clicking on the spellechek button with the popup open would make it blink but not close, clicking in the writing space wouldn’t do anything but clicking in the bottom bar (not on the button) would close it.
“New Chapter” from book homepage puts the new chapter at the top instead of the bottom.
The clickable part of chapter in the outline doesn’t cover then entire zone that changes color on hover.
For locales: refactoring all text of the interface into a json with names of where they must be put (it will additionally be a great way to finally revising all the quirky names introduced by claude).
Make sure that app theme defaults to system theme (maybe add a system toggle with the sun/moon one)
Add a typewriter-like writing style where current line stays centered.
it just hit me that the scene break is most likely also the color of lines, so separate that as well (as well meaning this goes with: scrollbar and contents panel line)
Add a write-only mode where backspace/del don’t work (or just go back by selecting characters? so you can rewrite a character… I don’t know but basically the point is to prevent editing while still allowing someone to correct stuff or at least specify stuff needs correcting, much like a typewriter)
noticed that when navigating with tab the selection disappears when it hits a hidden cross (for setting aside chapters) in the outline.
modifying the app setting up steps (order and how they work) to reduce the opening time (and the impression of it) to seemingly nothing.
offering a library of themes (it’s hard to choose colors!) as an addition to full customisation (it’s just loaded so still fully customisable—i guess we can make it so the app detects the theme being used (by comparing values so any modification from the user doesn’t register as the theme). We could also offer some font/writing themes and export templates but they all should be separating things.
