Notepad

Note

Here's the main issue I have:

I don't think a notepad should be loaded onto the canva which only for the story itself. The problem is that side panels are pretty narrow. Even if I allowed resizing, it would quickly overlap with the text which wouldn't allow for one to easily have notes open while writing.

Another option is a bottom panel. That sort of makes sense in combination with typewriter scolling since the current (which is generally the last) line will always be centered on the canva (so the bottom is actually free a lot of the time). There's also the fact that side panels (right) are not supposed to be about contents but about form.

Another option would be to make it a modal, like outtakes. But modals are not supposed to stay open while you write. I'd have to think about whether I make it an exception (where you can pin it anywhere and keep writing underneath) or whether their utility is in being easily accessible, manipulable and readable (the idea being that if it's super easily to summon and dismiss it, you might not actually need it to hover).

I think that last point is interesting and requires further thinking about. It might mean it would be more interesting to have either multiple shortcuts for multiple notes or one shortcut that opens a sort of command panel for notes, where you can type the name of the note or cycle through them.

My favourite idea so far:

  • a note opens as a modal by default
  • alternate opening open as a side/bottom or panel (so you can keep it open while you write)
  • a command opens a fuzzy match search
  • first entry is last-open note
  • tab and arrows allow cycling through
  • enter for entering selected one
  • instantly writing when using command searches
    • gives: matching title, create new, other matches
    • if no matching title, enter: creates new
